mECHANICAL PROPOSAL
DEPTH TOPICS
The mechanical redesign proposal for Agricultural Engineering Building located at University Park, Pennsylvania was done on this report. Technical Reports 1, 2, and 3 helped developed the the redesign and the breadth topics as well.
The main focus of the mechanical redesign is to do a economical analysis comparison on having building’s own cooling and heating plant and connected to the campus utility loop. A thorough examination will be performed for operating cost, connection cost, building energy usage, and break even point. For the cooling plant, two chillers were selected, centrifugal air cooled and water cooled chiller with cooling tower for the comparison. Another alternative is the heating plant redesign, looking at condensing and non condensing, and electric boiler. Using the model from the Tech Report 3 as the baseline, the Trace700 will be used to model and do life cycle cost analysis.
The breadth topics includes acoustical analysis on the mechanical equipments and isolation requirements and the daylighting analysis on overhangs at east and north windows. Lastly, the work schedule for spring semester was drafted.
REVISED PROPOSAL
BREADTH TOPICS
Topic 1. Daylighting & Use of Overhangs
The current windows throughout the building does not utilize any overhangs. Study of solar angles, effect of the overhangs and possible lighting energy savings will be analyzed at building north and east side windows of the building, which are mainly private offices or laboratories. Analysis of two different overhang types will be performed and comparison of the energy saving, and initial cost will be performed.
Topic 2. Acoustical Analysis
Acoustical analysis will be done for the different mechanical equipment proposed in redesign depth topics. The mechanical equipment generates both structural borne and airborne sounds. The acoustical and vibration analysis will be done for each cooling and heating equipment and propose a concrete isolation pad if needed to reduce the vibration coming from the mechanical equipments.
